About MAYWOOD, CA
The Laguna Land & Water Company, owners and subdividers of Maywood, was incorporated under the laws of the State of California, December 3rd, 1912, for the purpose of purchasing the famous old de Baker Rancho from the Estate of the finest soil in Los Angeles County, It had constituted an impassable barrier in the path of Los Angeles and for years had impeded the growth of the city in this direction while surrounding properties were being subdivided and developed in acres, half-acres and city lots.
"It is easy to explain why the City has grown so rapidly. Here the climate is marvelous, rolling hills, fertile and flowering fields enthrall and entrance one. Clear visioned men business and of industry have located in and around Maywood because the have found a climate ideal for all-year labor and factory efficiency; the found cheap fuel, oil, gas, and hydroelectric power at low rates. Such nationally know firms as Willys- Overland, Firestone, Goodyear and Goodrich have recognized the advantages our community offers them and they are only forerunners of other great industrial plants which will build in our midst. Maywood is the hub of this great industrial development and her future is bright with cooperation on the part of her people; with coordination of the forces that build up a community there is no reason why Maywood should not continue to grow and become one of the most important factors in the upbuilding of Southern California."
Maywood celebrated its 25th Anniversary in 1949 with a rodeo, beard-growing contest and professional wrestling matches in the City park.
Maywood is proud of its Parks & Recreation Department which has its own long and interesting history. The Maywood Park, located at 58th St. and Heliotrope Ave., had its beginnings in the 1930's when the present day baseball field was a large meadow. In the early 1950's Maywood Park became the home of the Golden State Baseball Association.
Now, 77 more than 80 years since incorporation, Maywood retains its small atmosphere, though surrounded by a massive metropolis. Maywood still offers an ideal residential community for those who working surrounding communities.
As one looks around Maywood today, sweeping changes can be seen, such as four new shopping centers at the corner of Slauson Avenue and Atlantic Boulevard; a new senior citizens complex; a new 2.8 million dollars Multi-Purpose facility an industrial complex on Maywood Avenue and numerous brand new businesses springing up in the city.
