National City is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 54,260 at the 2000 census.
National City is located on San Diego Bay, just minutes from the U.S. - Mexico Border and the San Diego and Tijuana International Airports.
The National City Marine Terminal, part of the Unified Port of San Diego, is the most advanced vehicle import and export facility on the West Coast. Pasha Automotive Services processes more than 270,000 vehicles annually. Lumber is also handled at this busy terminal on the edge of National City’s modern industrial and commercial parks. Dixieline Lumber Company and Weyerhauser Co. import lumber from the Pacific Northwest for construction use throughout the region.
National City’s port area extends three miles along San Diego Bay and is part of the largest U.S. Navy installation on the West Coast. Numerous working waterfront businesses are located in National City, including Knight and Carver Yacht Center. The Port of San Diego Ship Repair Association has 16 member companies in National City employing some 600 people.
National City is home to the Mile of Cars — one of the nation’s first auto malls. The Mile of Cars leads the San Diego area in number of vehicles sold and dollar sales. Westfield Plaza Bonita, an enclosed shopping center with 140 stores, further strengthens National City’s economy.
Paradise Valley Hospital is the city’s largest employer with over 1,500 employees. Recently celebrating 100 years of healing, Paradise Valley Hospital has begun extensive re-development of its 54 acre campus starting with building affordable work-force housing in partnership with The Olson Company. This nationally recognized project, called Paradise Walk, contains 96 townhouses. Future development will include a senior living village, a medical office building, and a new hospital building.
National City has one of the healthiest business climates in southern California and boasts more than 2,500 businesses- a remarkable number for a city with a population of 54,400.
National City is reinventing its urban center. A first step in May 2003 was the dedication of the new Chamber of Commerce Building and Visitors Center followed by the 2004 opening of the South County Regional Education Center. A new fire station opened in 2005 as did a state-of-the-art Public Library. Potentially two billion dollars in proposed projects are revitalizing National City and its residential neighborhoods – resulting in 2,000 new homes.
Downtown National City will be vastly transformed by multiple high-rise condominium buildings offering ocean views and contemporary urban living including retail stores and underground parking. Australian-based Constellation Property Group is building ultra-modern condos as part of its Centro project – the first high-rise development to break ground downtown. Other developers’ projects will include Harbor View, Library Village, Marinus, and Park Village. Also coming soon are an Aquatic Center and Pier Marina 32 adjacent to Pepper Park plus a three star hotel.
