Vacaville, California is located in northern Solano County, midway between San Francisco and Sacramento. The City of Vacaville, incorporated in 1892 and currently comprising just under 27 square miles, has a beautiful setting bordered by rolling hillsides, fruit orchards and fertile farmland. With an elevation ranging from 90 to 300 feet, Vacaville enjoys warm summers and mild winters, with an average summer high of 94º and an average winter low of 36º. Annual rainfall averages 17.39 inches.  The City's rich  history has transformed the community from a small agricultural town into a thriving and progressive city; now a diverse population of 96,735 residents call Vacaville home. While the City’s population history and demographics (information provided by Census 2000) show its rapid growth, Vacaville remains a “small town at heart,” whose residents pride themselves on the high level of community involvement.

Affordable housing, quality schools, a wide array of youth activities, and numerous community events contribute to making Vacaville a family-oriented city. The median price of a home in Vacaville (as of March 2005) is about $425,000. Residents of all ages participate in organized sports leagues year-round, including soccer, baseball, softball, and ice hockey. In addition, the City of Vacaville provides high quality recreation programs for all ages, and has continued to invest in state-of-the-art public recreation facilities, including a new community pool with water slides and a diving well, ball fields, and a skateboard park. There are numerous community events throughout the year that provide fun for the entire family, including the annual Fiesta Days and Fourth of July celebrations, a “Tribute to Seniors”, free concerts during the summer at the downtown Creekwalk, and the “Merriment on Main” festivities during the holiday season.

With Vacaville’s central location, residents can “day trip” to beaches, Lake Tahoe, and the Napa wine country. However, they need not look further than Vacaville for a wide range of arts and entertainment opportunities, including the Vacaville Performing Arts Theater. For those who enjoy the outdoors, Lagoon Valley Park provides the opportunity to fish, hike, and sail in a scenic, natural setting. Other options include enjoying the downtown with a stroll along the beautiful Creekwalk, catching a movie, or hitting the ice at the skating center. Residents and visitors enjoy an expanding choice of restaurants in the revitalized, historic downtown, and some of the best shopping in the area with a thriving retail district along Interstate 80 that includes one of the largest factory outlet complexes in California.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 70.1 km2 (27.1 mi2). 70.1 km2 (27.1 mi2) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Vacaville Demographics:

As of the census of 2000, there are 88,625 people, 28,105 households, and 20,966 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,263.6/km2 (3,272.3/mi2). There are 28,696 housing units at an average density of 409.1/km2 (1,059.5/mi2). The racial makeup of the city is 72.11% White, 10.02% African American, 0.97% Native American, 4.18% Asian, 0.45% Pacific Islander, 6.74% from other races, and 5.53% from two or more races. 17.88% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 28,105 households out of which 41.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.0% are married couples living together, 12.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.4% are non-families. 19.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 6.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.83 and the average family size is 3.24.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.0% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 35.4% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 118.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 124.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $57,667, and the median income for a family is $63,950. Males have a median income of $43,527 versus $31,748 for females. The per capita income for the city is $21,557. 6.1% of the population and 4.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.4% of those under the age of 18 and 4.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
