Founded in 1855 and incorporated in 1879, Frankfort's rich heritage continues to be evident throughout the Village. From its historic downtown district to the Prairie-style architecture of many homes and commercial buildings, heritage and history have been carefully preserved.

While the first pioneers were mostly of English and Scottish descent, German settlers made the Village of Frankfort a reality. The 1840's brought German settlers from the Pennsylvania area to Frankfort. Frankfort Township was named by Frederick Cappel after his native city, Frankfurt-Am-Main, Germany. In 1855, the Joliet and Northern Indiana Railroad built a line through the present Village and named it "Frankfort Station". After the Village was incorporated, the word "Station" was dropped from the name.

Today, Frankfort is thriving and has become known as the "Jewel of the South Suburbs". This distinction was recently recognized with the Southland's Reader's Choice award for "Best Community" in 2003. Experiencing rapid growth, attracting new residents, commercial and industrial businesses, Frankfort has been identified as a premier community in Will County, one of the fastest growing counties in Illinois.
